Mariner's Hope Chest
More than a century ago, mariner's wives off the coast of New England would ascend to the highest point of their houses at sunset, hoping for a glimpse of returning ships on the horizon. These elevated platforms were called Widow's Walks, suggesting an inevitably bleak outcome to the lovesick tale. Yet despite the name, many a mariner did return home to his joyous bride, living out his days in relative peace and tranquility. And it's our hope to capture that spirit in our elegantly storied Mariner's Hopechest. Designed with flanking, jewel box drawers, the threeover- three Chest is perfect for storing keepsakes, love letters and mementos. Ample lower drawers are deep set for maximum functionality. And the delicate, teardrop drawer pulls are counter-screwed for durability. Featuring extensive burl veneer panels on the sides and top, the distressed walnut case is accented with an inset oyster relief. A wonderful tribute to the fortunate mariners who not only braved the elements, but found their way home.
